Piggy Bank

In April 1996 a civil war began in Monrovia, Liberia. This was the continuation of the Civil War which started in 1990; my mother, sisters and brother, and I were living in Barnerville Estate. Since there were no bank open we had to break open our piggy bank. This was the last money we had. The night came and we all discuss that the piggy bank had to be open. It was a green piggy bank about six inches long and four inches wide. The cash total was approximately two hundred and twenty five dollars. I remember well because I was the shopper. I went to the market the follow day and purchased groceries. Some of these items were fish, crabs, shrimp, and kissmeat. And my mother made palm butter and fufu. One on the best meal ever eaten. After the great food we walked from our home to town. We stayed with Aunty Janie. A day later my mother and sister when ahead to American Embassy and we follow a day later. We where airlifted and brought to the United States; Minnesota to be exact. As we landed I was shock as the State of Minnesota had no fruit trees; this was early April spring time. Summer came and the life of the place begin. New place and new life!
